Diabetes diet during Ramadan

Share:Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is an important spiritual practice. If you have diabetes and are fasting, it is very important to watch what you eat. Diabetes diet can be managed by following the dietary guidelines as given below:
- Checking blood glucose will not break a fast. Frequent monitoring of blood sugar level is key to safe fasting for diabetics.
- Eat your first meal (suhoor meal) just sometime before the fast starts. Do not overeat or start eating very early from the time of fast starts and break your fast at the beginning of the stipulated time.
- Moderation in eating is the key to good health. Avoid over-eating.
- Distributing calories over 2 to 3 smaller meals during the no-fasting interval – rather than eating one big meal – may help to prevent excessive hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) after you eat.
Foods to eat at Iftar (the fast-breaking meal)
- Carbohydrates with low glycemic index (GI) such as brown rice, full grain bread and vegetables are better options than white rice, non-full grain bread or potatoes.
- Include Nuts (almond, walnut) and oily fish as they are excellent sources of energy and help to increase HDL (good cholesterol).
- Include fruits, fresh vegetable salads without oily dressings, lentils, yoghurt, whole serial made food items, steam cooked or boiled vegetables with no or less of oils / fats, non-vegetarian items grilled or steam cooked instead of frying.
- Limit use of deep fried and oil rich food items like parathas, puris, pakodas, samosas, vada, fried chicken/fish/mutton etc.
- Avoid breaking your fast with sugar sweetened beverages and tea or coffee as it will lead to dehydration. Instead hydrate with milk and sugar free drinks.
Sample Diabetes Diet during Ramadan fasting
- 1 cup Oats with milk/2 egg white omellete with 1 chapati
- 1 cup curd/milk/buttermilk
- 1 Fruit (Apple/pear/papaya)
- A handful of unsalted nuts
- 1 bowl Fruit & Vegetale salad
- 1 Panner paratha/ 1 chicken kheema paratha/ 1 chapati with vegetable
- 1 cup curd or buttermilk
- 1 bowl Salad
- 2 Whole wheat chapati
- 1 cup vegetable
- 1 cup Dal/ 2 pcs chicken/ 2 pcs fish
